A Nigerian grandfather has been arrested for trying to smuggle drugs to his daughter in Dubai, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of Nigeria announced on Sunday.

The 63-year-old was detained at Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, Ikeja, Nigeria.

NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi said the suspect had admitted hiding the marijuana in black natural soap as part of a mailing to his daughter who lives in Dubai.

“He also admitted that this was the second time he tried to send this illegal substance to his daughter,” Babafemi said.

A Nigerian freight forwarder was separately arrested for trying to export 250 grams of tramadol and cannabis to Dubai.

Zero Tolerance Policy

The UAE has a zero-tolerance policy on drug trafficking.

In March, Dubai police cracked down on 100 resellers who were peddling via WhatsApp. In May 2022, Dubai Police scored another major success in the fight against drug trafficking when they dismantled a global drug syndicate as part of a sting operation code-named “Sugar Cane”, which was linked to France, Spain and Colombia. in cooperation with law enforcement agencies.

The operation resulted in the arrest of 18 criminals and the seizure of 22 tonnes of cocaine-tainted sugar smuggled from Colombia through the French port of Le Havre. Among those arrested was MD, whom Dubai Police Commander-in-Chief Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Mari described as a key member of the gang.

Last year, Abu Dhabi police seized drugs with an estimated street value of Dh1.2 billion as part of a crackdown on drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, Sharjah Police’s anti-narcotics unit has seized drugs worth AED135 million from 2021 to May 2022. The drugs included 822kg of methamphetamine, 94kg of cannabis and 251kg of heroin.
