Zephyr — This month, Granite Theatre is bringing everyone’s favorite green ogre to life with Shrek the Musical, who gets girls and discovers that friendship is far better than loneliness.
Set in the mythical “Once Upon a Time” land, Shrek the Musical is a very silly but lovely fairy tale about a giant green ogre who has been ridiculed and feared for his entire life by anything that travels through it His path, back into an ugly green swamp, exists happily in isolation.
Suddenly, a group of homeless fairy tale characters – Pinocchio, Cinderella, the Three Pigs and others – attacked his shelter, saying they had been banished by the vertically challenged Lord Farquad. So Shrek made a deal: “If you give me my home back, I’ll take yours back,” he told them.
But when Shrek and Farquad met, God made a deal of his own: If Shrek rescued Princess Fiona, he would return the fairytale characters’ homes to them. Shrek agreed, only to find something appealing about this pretty princess—something strange and different. He likes her. A lot…but why does she always run away when the sun goes down?
The show is directed and choreographed by Granite’s artistic director Erin Sousa-Stanley, who invites theatre lovers “to come and enjoy the music and magic that our troupe of actors creates on stage and immerse themselves in the possibilities of happiness ever since”.
Musically directed by Chris Stanley, the show stars Jaron Wilbur as Shrek and Grace Gilbert as Fiona.
