Swedish activist Greta Thunberg said climate summits such as the Cop27 meeting scheduled for next week in Egypt were a “hoax” that “failed” people and the planet by not leading to “significant changes”.
Greta Thunberg asserts that those in power are using high-profile rallies to attract attention and are “greenwashing, lying and cheating”.
“The police aren’t really going to cause any major changes right now, unless, of course, we use them as an opportunity to mobilize,” Greta Thunberg said on stage at the Southbank Centre London Literary Festival on Sunday.

She added that campaigners must work to “make people aware that this is a scam and that these systems are failing us”.
Regarding the controversial methods of groups such as Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil that have recently made headlines, including pouring soup on Van Gough’s sunflowers, Greta Thunberg said it was “reasonable” to expect climate activists to try a different type of action.
“We’re in a very desperate situation right now, and a lot of people are getting desperate and trying to find new ways because we realize what we’ve been doing so far hasn’t worked out,” Greta Thunberg said.
“It’s one thing to hurt someone, it’s another thing to make someone angry,” she added.
The Cop27 climate summit will be held in Egypt, where world leaders, climate scientists and activists aim to drive action against the climate crisis.
