Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil Predicts Six More Weeks Of Winter On This Year’s Groundhog Day

[ad_1]

Roommates, if you were hoping that the cold temperatures of winter were finally fading away in favor of the forthcoming spring season, you’d be wrong—at least according to Punxsutawney Phil’s weather prediction on this year’s Groundhog Day. Earlier today during the early morning hours, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, which means that according to Groundhog Day tradition, we’re in for six more weeks of winter instead of an early spring.

Over at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, legendary groundhog Punxsutawney Phil gave his prediction for this year’s Groundhog Day—and fans of warm weather are likely to ask him for a do over. Phil, the groundhog that’s been predicting the weather since 1887, saw his shadow, meaning that winter will still be present for another six weeks.

On Groundhog Day 2021, Phil also saw his shadow, once again meaning six weeks of additional cold weather. However, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information, he was only halfway correct last year. The environmental organization stated that “The contiguous United States saw below average temperatures in February [2021] and above average temperatures in March of last year. Phil was 50/50 on his forecast.”

Additionally, while Punxsutawney Phil is known as the weather authority for Groundhog Day, the NCEI noted that his track record is far from perfect, revealing that “On average, Phil has gotten it right 40% of the time over the past 10 years.”
