The Federal Government has advised prospective United Arab Emirates (UAE) visa applicants to clearly state their visa preferences when applying, not to be vague and to respect the immigration laws of other countries to avoid unreasonable treatment.

A statement signed by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Francisca Omayuli noted that the UAE government has introduced a new visa regime and has stopped issuing tourist visas to those under 40.

It said this was the result of some videos on social media showing Nigerians stranded in Dubai appealing to the federal government after being denied entry at the airport.

According to the statement, prospective visa applicants must now clearly indicate their visa preferences.

The federal government has urged Nigerians to respect immigration laws in other countries to avoid unreasonable treatment.

The statement read: “The attention of the Federal Government was drawn to a video on social media showing allegedly stranded Nigerians arriving at the airport in Dubai, UAE on 29 August 2022, despite holding Valid visa but still refused entry. .

“The Nigerian Mission in Dubai clarified that most of the Nigerians who were allegedly stranded were given family visas and just arrived in Dubai alone without any family members. As a result, they were refused entry and advised to return to their home countries and apply for the appropriate visa.

“However, those who were allowed into the country had family members in the UAE, while those who claimed their family members were on another flight were told to wait at the airport, awaiting their arrival.

“The general public is asked to take note and be guided that the UAE government has introduced a new visa regime and has stopped issuing tourist visas to those under the age of 40, with the exception of those applying for family visas.

“Therefore, it is instructive for prospective visa applicants to clearly state their visa preferences, without any ambiguity, and to respect the immigration laws of other countries to avoid unwanted treatment.”
