It’s a big week in the UAE’s pandemic story…
As you probably already know, there are some very important rule and regulatory changes coming from Last night’s National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Agency (NCEMA) Covid-19 briefing.
These changes are made possible by the UAE’s acclaimed mobility and proactive pandemic management policies.
New U(AE)
The first and probably the most immediately impactful update is the licensing of masks. Beginning Wednesday, September 28, 2022, the requirement to wear masks in most indoor spaces will be lifted. The rule on wearing masks outdoors was lifted in February.
In the UAE, people are still required to wear masks when taking public transport, going to mosques or in medical settings. Food service providers and suspected Covid-19 cases will also be required to continue to wear masks.
However, in all other indoor settings, including schools, hotels and malls, masks will be optional starting Wednesday. This is good news for parents with schoolchildren, who are still required to wear masks while indoors in class and between classes.
Events and airlines will have the power to decide whether to implement mask requirements during their operations. Abu Dhabi has a packed schedule of indoor and outdoor events in the fourth quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023 – so questions remain as to whether masks will be required during these festivities.

One of the other aspects covered by the announcement on Monday, September 27 is the availability of the green pass window on the Alhosn app.
This is of particular interest to residents and tourists in Abu Dhabi, where a green pass is still required to enter almost all public spaces
So what has changed?
The main update is starting Wednesday with full vaccinations (including necessary booster) and those who are medically validated and actively exempt from vaccines. Therefore, those in the Vaccination/Exemption category will get a 30-day green pass in the app after a negative PCR result is obtained in the UAE and uploaded to the Alhosn system. But take note – the vaccine or vaccine waiver must exist in the Alhosn app to apply for the 30-day Green Pass.
For those partially or unvaccinated, the green pass will be valid for 7 days after a negative PCR test.

What is an Alhosn Green Pass?
The Alhosn Green Pass is essentially a traffic light app that shows your current Covid-19 test and vaccination status, just like wearing a mask, it is very important for travelling to public places in Abu Dhabi.
It’s free and available from apple, google play, Samsung Store and application library. The app has many features, but its main function is to store your vaccination data (residents vaccinated in the UAE should load their information automatically, tourists vaccinated overseas should upload their certificate to the system following the guidelines below), and displays any recent PCR tests associated with your account.
Quarantine rule update
The NCEMA announcement also includes changes to quarantine rules.
Close contacts are not required to isolate, but should be tested for PCR immediately if they develop symptoms.
Mandatory quarantine for confirmed cases has been shortened to five days.
How tourists can prove they have been vaccinated
The Alhosn app, which provides a portal to almost all public spaces in Abu Dhabi, has just received a new update that will make it easier for tourists wishing to visit the emirate.
The new feature will allow tourists to download the app and register in advance, using their passport number, rather than having to wait for the UID number issued as part of their visa (as was the case before this latest change).more details Check out our guide.
Vaccine certificates will be essential for those wishing to enter the UAE under these updated rules.Visitors must register their documents at ICA website Five days before departure date. We recommend doing this on the desktop site as the reports are more functional.
As a first step, download the ICA application and fill out the form under the “Registration to Arrive” section. Here you can upload your vaccination certificate and upon completion you will receive a text message with a link to download the Alhosn app. You need to use the same phone number on the ICA app as the Alhosn app – we recommend you use the UAE sim (you can change the registered phone number registered to ICA via the ICA app).
Next you will need a UID number, which can be found at the airport or via ICA website. This is essential for setting up your profile on the Alhosn app. You will need to link your phone number to your Alhosn account (the same one you use for ICA).
