SEOUL, Jan. 30 (UPI) — South Korea’s Hanwha Solutions has announced that it has entered into a solar partnership with US tech giant Microsoft.

Under the agreement announced Thursday, the two companies will work on various solar projects with the goal of helping Microsoft become carbon negative by the end of the decade.

Hanwha Q cells, a subsidiary of Hanwha Solutions, will provide solar panels with a capacity of at least 2.5 GW and related services to selected solar sites that Microsoft has contracted.

According to Hanwha, these facilities will be able to power more than 400,000 homes.

Hanwha Q CELLS CEO Lee Koo-yung said in a statement: “We are working hard to build and deliver clean, turnkey energy solutions, including those made in the USA, and our partnership with Microsoft will help make this happen.” a vision.”

President of Microsoft brad smith Said that building a resilient solar supply chain is critical to advancing the global green energy economy.

“Microsoft’s partnership with Q Cells will help realize this vision by bringing innovation and investment to rural Georgia,” he said in a statement.

“As one of the world’s largest buyers of renewable energy, this work will help deliver more solar power to the grid faster.”

Earlier this month, Hanwha revealed plans to invest $2.57 billion to expand its solar production base and build a new solar components manufacturing plant in Georgia.

Hanwha expects the U.S. solar panel industry to grow by around 20 percent, in line with the government’s push to adopt more clean energy and reduce carbon emissions.

Microsoft has promised that by 2025, it will replace grid electricity with renewable energy, and by 2030 it will also be carbon neutral.

“The data centers of big tech companies consume a lot of electricity. Therefore, they are focusing on renewable energy. More and more of these companies will get involved in solar projects,” Kang Dong-jin, an analyst at HMC Investment Securities, told UPI News Korea.

“From Hanwha’s perspective, building a factory in the U.S. is a big commitment. But the company will also receive huge tax credits for the investment under the advanced manufacturing production credit system,” he said.
