Here’s how much a day trip from the UAE to the World Cup in Qatar costs

For fans in the UAE, there’s the chance to take a day trip to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, arriving on an early morning flight and returning to Dubai or Abu Dhabi on a late night bus.

Qatar residents have the most demand, followed by residents of Argentina, Mexico, the United States and the United Arab Emirates, FIFA said.

But as the World Cup progressed, it got expensive.

Below is a rough breakdown of day trip costs.

It takes about an hour to get to Doha from Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and the cheapest way to see it is to fly there for a day.

Flights on flydubai, Air Arabia and Etihad’s matchday shuttles cost between AED 1,500 and AED 2,000 (US$408-US$545) round-trip.

Qatar Airways charges about Dh2,500 for the same service.

This would involve you entering Doha on a flight from the UAE around 6am, which is an hour behind the time zone, around 8am.

Return flights run throughout the night, some after midnight, so you’ll spend at least 15 hours on the ground to soak up the atmosphere.

Prices are always changing, but a flight from Abu Dhabi to Doha on Sunday morning and return on Thursday evening costs Dh3,580 on Etihad and Dh4,320 on Qatar Airways.

Local shops and supermarkets will offer better value, but it depends on your willingness to shell out a little more.

So what is free?

not much. Your Hayya card gives you free travel on the Doha Metro (6 dirhams ($1.60) per day is cheap enough.

It’s unclear if there will be free water fountains.

As World Cup organizers trialled the Lusail Super Cup, there was a lack of water and long queues at subway stations.

It might be wise to bring a small snack or packed lunch.

Are there other options besides flying?
