In the decades since the British Open, the number of events offering cash prizes has grown slowly but steadily. Most are held in the UK, but there are also national open championships in several continental European countries.
For several years, however, the players were still unable to support themselves with the prizes they won. Beginning in 1901, British professional golfers were represented by the Professional Golfers’ Association, which eventually created the European Tour.
After World War II, prize money began to increase significantly, also thanks to television coverage of the competition. However, each game is still organized individually by a club, an association or a sponsor.
In the United States, the PGA Tour has existed since the 1930s, so in 1972 the PGA established the European Tour. In the first few years, the season lasted six months, from April to October, and took place entirely in Europe, mainly in the UK and Ireland.
For example, there were 20 games in the 1972 season, 12 in England and 1 in Ireland. Of the seven tournaments on the continent, six are National Opens, namely the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Switzerland, while the seventh is the Madrid Open.
Over the next three decades, the tour gradually expanded and globalized. The first tournament to be held outside of Europe was the Tunisian Open in 1982. That year, there were 27 games in the season, which ran through November.
In 1984, the PGA European Tour became independent from the Professional Golfers Association. The European Tour has always had a clear risk of its best players moving to the PGA Tour. The PGA Tour typically offers higher prize money, while European players look to boost their prestige by competing in the next three major events in the United States.
Played other games in that country to suit different styles of golf courses. In response to this phenomenon, the European Tour introduced the “Volvo Prize Pool” in 1988: an additional bonus awarded at the end of the season to Player of the Year, but only for players who have played a large number of Tour Championships.
The system continued until 1998, after which the prize pool was again concentrated in individual tournaments. In 1989, the Tour made its first stop in Asia for the Dubai Desert Classic. By 1990, the calendar included 38 games, 37 of which were held in Europe, and the season start was moved to February.
The Tour’s first event in the Far East was the Johnnie Walker Classic in Bangkok in 1992. This is a major innovation as the Far East has become the second home of the Tour. In 1994, shortly after the tour ended, it appeared in the countries of the former Soviet bloc at the Czech Open, but its development in these countries was still limited, both due to the scarcity of local sponsors’ financial resources compared to Western Europe and the fact that in the summer It’s hard to find free calendar dates during this period.
However, the secondary tours, the challenge tours, make stops in these areas more frequently than the main tours. In 1995, the European Tour began partnering with other tours, starting with the Southern Africa Tour (now the Sunshine Tour).
