Saturday 30 July will be an official paid holiday for all public sector employees in the Emirate of Dubai. This date marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year (1444H).

Unlike the Gregorian New Year, which is based on the solar system, the Islamic New Year is based on the lunar system. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar.

Earlier this month, Ibrahim Al Jarwan, a member of the International Union of Astronomy and Space Science, noted that Islamic New Year – also known as Hijri New Year or Arabic New Year – will be celebrated on July 30 this year.

The next statutory holiday also falls on Saturday – October 8, in honor of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Holidays to commemorate Remembrance Day and UAE National Day will be transformed into a four-day weekend. December 1st, 2nd and 3rd are closed; December 4th is a Sunday, so there are four days off.
