LSU Hilltop Arboretum will host FrogWatch training and annual workshops in January.
Training sessions are held Tuesdays from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Beverly Brown Coates Auditorium at 11855 Highland Road.
The training, in partnership with Louisiana Naturalists of Greater Baton Rouge, will teach participants how to become FrogWatch Community Scientists and monitor frogs and toads throughout Louisiana.
“Help protect these important amphibians by gathering valuable information on frog and toad populations, distribution and timing of seasons,” a release said. “Learn how to identify frogs and toads in community wetlands and add your observations to national datasets.”
Katherine Givenen leads the course, $10 for Hilltop members and the Louisiana Naturalists of Greater Baton Rouge (Master Naturalists of Greater Baton Rouge), $15 for nonmembers .
The Arboretum’s annual symposium, “Stories of Iris Conservation and Adaptation,” will be held on Saturdays from 8:30am to 1pm in the Main Library, Goodwood Conference Room, 7711 Goodwood Avenue.
Symposium speakers will include Patrick O’Connor, Charles Perilloux and Dana Nunez Brown.
“The Louisiana iris is an important part of Louisiana’s natural heritage, which is greatly impacted by land use and climate change,” a release said. “During this symposium, speakers will discuss Iris species found in Louisiana, their discovery and their natural history.”
Iris experts O’Connor and Perilloux will share what they know about irises and how their distribution has changed over time, weaving the story of human-plant interactions. They will also discuss the future of irises and what is needed for their conservation and adaptation.
Building on her book, Harnessing Plants for Stormwater Management, Architect Brown will focus on how irises and other species provide important ecosystem services and are key plants for stormwater management.
Following the presentations, an interactive panel discussion will be open to questions from attendees.
Registration is free for members $500 and up, $50 for members, $65 for non-members.
