MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina (WMBF) – First Presbyterian Church is currently vacant on North Kings Highway.
Now, the old church will soon find a new kind of joy, as developer Mayfair Parkers hopes to transform the 1940s church into a 1920s-themed attraction called the Roar.
“What this organization has done is take unique buildings that are historically significant and adapt them for entertainment and dining,” said attorney Robert Lewis
Lewis represents the developers of the project. Attractions will include bars, a virtual golf course, a bowling alley and indoor and outdoor restaurants, he said.
The main goal, he said, is to preserve the church, which was deemed abandoned by the Myrtle Beach City Council just last month.
“Our concept is for the age of my kids, which is 28 to 36, and also for families. Again, you go to the Grand Strand Brewery and you see people in that age group with their kids,” he said.
Lewis said the venue will primarily appeal to that age group, but will generally be good for the city as a whole.
He said they hope to have it up and running as soon as next year.
At a Myrtle Beach City Planning Commission meeting Tuesday, Lewis pitched the idea to the board, and they all supported it.
Roar’s plans are expected to be addressed by the city next month.
