The Hong Kong government has asked a court to ban a popular song that became the unofficial anthem of the 2019 pro-democracy protests.

The Justice Department said in a statement that it had applied for an injunction on Monday that would make it illegal to perform or broadcast the protest song “Glory.” Hongkong – To prevent someone from inciting secession or insulting the Chinese national anthem.

“Recently, the song has also been mistaken for the ‘Hong Kong National Anthem’ many times,” the government said in a statement.

“This not only insulted the national anthem, but also caused serious damage to the country and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.”

The government also tried to ban 32 videos of the song from YouTube, including English, Dutch and Japanese versions.

The injunction application came after the song was played at several global events, including an ice hockey game in February.

Hong Kong does not have its own national anthem.

After the Hong Kong ice hockey team beat Iran in an international match, protests were made over the mistaken replacement of the Chinese national anthem, March of the Volunteers.

Google said that when users search for the Hong Kong national anthem, it will not modify its search results to show the Chinese national anthem instead of the protest song.

Demonstrators in the former British colony made it their national anthem when they protested in 2019 against a now-stalled extradition bill that would have allowed suspects to be sent to mainland China for trial .

In 2020, the song was banned in schools and could result in a life sentence as China imposed a national security law in the financial center to punish acts of secession, subversion, terrorism and alliances with foreign entities.

The government is now awaiting directions from the court, and a hearing date has yet to be set.
