How films made in the UAE tell the stories of the people living in the country

[ad_1]

The UAE film scene is thriving, growing exponentially over the past decade. Films produced here tell stories inspired by Emirati culture and the culture of the country’s people.

Speaking of harrij timesEmirati writer and director Hassiba Freiha has described the UAE film industry as a car built with the best parts that many are now ready to drive and excited about. “In the GCC, the UAE is definitely one of the leaders in the film production industry. Several Hollywood films are being shot here and many Emirati are exposed to the highest production standards. There is so much talent,” she said.

Today, December 1, the feature film Farah, co-directed by Hassiba and her husband Kenton Oxley, opens in UAE cinemas. The film, a psychological thriller set in Lebanon, explores themes such as mental health and the role of Big Pharma — topics that, according to Hassiba, are far less relevant today than when the film was made in 2019. Familiar—just before the pandemic. Since its world premiere at the Beirut International Women’s Film Festival earlier this year, Farah has garnered a string of international acclaim

Speaking of UAE cinema, Hassiba, who has previously worked with Twofour54, said she felt the films made here told stories where different cultures came together, but through the work of an Emirati filmmaker. “We have many different cultures that are merging and interacting. They haven’t lived here for centuries – they’re actually new societies that are merging in this cosmopolitan city,” she said.

For young creatives who want to break into the industry but feel insecure or judged, Hassiba’s advice is to take the first step, and soon those around you and society will notice. “The industry has become so legitimate that their parents support them,” she said.

She added that when young creatives are able to break out of the box, they understand supporting their children. “Supporting industry diversity in this country is important and has a knock-on effect. You have to believe in yourself first, have faith in yourself. Take small steps and you will get there,” she said.
