How to apply for a new remote residence permit from September 5

People from the UAE will be able to apply New residence permit for remote work Begins Monday, September 5th.

The residence permit was first announced in March 2021 but will be launched next week for employees who wish to live in the UAE but work for companies that do not operate in the country.

The one-year visa, which can be renewed for another year, allows people to enter the UAE from overseas at their own expense and work under the terms and conditions on which the visa was issued.

Who is eligible?

To apply for a visa, an employee should have evidence that he or she is working remotely from a company outside the UAE.

Applicants should hold a valid passport for at least six months and health insurance covering medical expenses in the UAE.

A person with a remote work permit can also sponsor family members, but the duration of residency should be the same as the sponsor.

How to apply from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Northern UAE?

Those wishing to apply from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah must submit an application on the Federal Identity and Citizenship Authority (ICA) website and obtain a 60-day entry permit.

Here is the step-by-step process to apply:

  • Register on the ICA website – https://icp.gov.ae.
  • Go to the Smart Services channel and log in.
  • Select the Remote Work Visa UAE option.
  • Upload documents, submit and pay the AED 300 fee.

ICA officials will approve the application. The AED 300 fee is just the application fee, people need to pay more when they come to the UAE. Not sure if there will be different rules for employees and people running their own businesses.

Applying from Dubai?

In Dubai, the remote work permit should be applied for on the website of Dubai Tourism and Business Marketing Company – www.visitdubai.com.

If you are an employee, you will need a one-year employment certificate from your current employer. You must earn at least USD 5,000 (Dh18,250) per month and submit last month’s payslip and three months’ bank statements.

If you are a business owner, you must provide proof of business ownership with a minimum monthly income of $5,000. Bank statements from the previous three months of the company account should be submitted as proof.

The application fee in Dubai is USD 287 (Dh1,050), which includes all fees. Paying the fee does not guarantee that you will receive a visa.

All applications will be reviewed and processed by the Dubai General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs.

What happens when you come to the UAE?

Once you have an entry permit, you must undergo a medical examination and apply for residency within 60 days, just like a regular work visa.

A remote residence permit allows you to rent a house, open a bank account and send your children to school.
