How to change your country’s driver’s license to the UAE version

Drivers from different countries can convert their driving licenses through different online platforms in the UAE.

Some holders of licenses from other countries will need to pass a test in the UAE in order to obtain a license.

For others, it’s just a case of converting their national driver’s license to the UAE version.

Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi Police said earlier this month that drivers should check that their licences are from a recognised country and are still valid before submitting conversion applications.

“Through this smart service, individuals can request to replace their driving licenses issued by specific foreign countries and Gulf countries with those issued by the UAE,” Abu Dhabi Police said in a tweet.

Licenses from the following countries and regions can be converted to the UAE version: GCC countries, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Turkey, Poland, United Kingdom , United States, Portugal, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, South Africa and Romania.

What do I need to apply for this service?

The first step is a vision test at an Abu Dhabi Police-approved optometrist. You will need a valid original foreign driver’s license, a legal Arabic translation of the foreign driver’s license (if not already in Arabic), a copy of your passport and Emirates ID, and two personal photos on a white background.

How to apply for service?

This person must be a resident of Abu Dhabi to apply for the service.

You can apply online by Tamm website of the Abu Dhabi government Or use the Abu Dhabi Police website or smart app.

You can also apply in person at Tamm’s Customer Service Centre or Abu Dhabi Police’s Traffic Licensing Department.

Dubai

Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) offers a driver’s license exchange service via their website.

This service is available for licenses in the following countries: GCC countries, Lithuania, Portugal, Hungary, Bulgaria, Latvia, Serbia, Luxembourg, Estonia, Cyprus, Slovakia, Slovenia, Albania, Romania, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Poland , Finland, Spain, Netherlands, Greece, Sweden, Belgium, Ireland, Turkey, Denmark, Austria, France, United Kingdom, Norway, Montenegro, Ukraine, Canada, United States, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, China, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa .

What does it take to apply for this service in Dubai?

To apply for the service, you will need an original driver’s license from one of the above countries, a vision test, a legal translation of your Emirates ID and your driver’s license (if not in English or Arabic).

If a resident holds a visa issued in another emirate but the company they work for has a branch in Dubai, they can apply through RTA after providing a letter from the company certifying their work in Dubai and a copy of the branch’s business license in Dubai and other emirates.

How to apply for services

go to RTA website to gain access to service. Specify the country and source of the driver’s license, and attach a copy.

After submitting the application, we will issue a reference number for all follow-up or inquiries.

Applicants must bring their original driver’s license to the RTA Customer Happiness Centre for verification. The license will then be printed and given to the customer.

Singapore residents need to submit an application through the Driving Academy and present the required documents to book a knowledge test.

The fee for converting a driver’s license is AED 870. For Singapore driving license holders, the fee is Dh1,070

other emirates

Residents of Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah can request to convert their foreign driving licences by Home Office website.

This service is available for licenses issued in the following countries: GCC countries, Lithuania, Portugal, Hungary, Bulgaria, Latvia, Serbia, Luxembourg, Estonia, Cyprus, Slovakia, Slovenia, Albania, Romania, Germany, Italy, Switzerland , Poland, Finland, Spain, Netherlands, Greece, Sweden, Belgium, Ireland, Turkey, Denmark, Austria, France, United Kingdom, Norway, Montenegro, Ukraine, Canada, United States, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, China, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa.

They will need to submit a legal translation of their foreign driver’s license along with their Emirates ID and undergo a vision test before logging on to the ministry’s website to use the service.

After paying AED 600, the customer needs to contact the Transport Licensing Department of the emirate and present the receipt to collect the UAE driving license.
