Indian expatriate Sana Khan is preparing to drive from Abu Dhabi to Dubai this weekend with one goal in mind: shopping in Global Village. It was the last weekend at the entertainment destination and she wanted to make sure she picked up some items.
“I know it’s going to be very crowded, but that’s okay,” she said. “Part of the fun is the crowd. I plan on leaving Abu Dhabi on a Saturday afternoon so I can get there when the gates open at 4pm. I buy something from Global Village every year. I love a special qahwa from the Saudi Pavilion ( coffee) powder. I also want to buy a leather jacket from the Pakistan Pavilion.”
These are the final days of Global Village and visitors are encouraged to visit on the weekend, during which time the facility will be open from 4pm to 2am daily from Friday to Sunday. Season 27 of Global Village will wrap up on Sunday, April 30.
The past few days have seen an influx of tourists looking to make the most of the destination before it closes. Mehnaz Hyder visited Global Village on Thursday with his parents and sisters who were visiting from India. “It was very crowded there,” she said. “We arrived around 7.30pm and there was a queue everywhere. However, I got some good deals. My sister bought some prayers from a stall for Dh100 Pad. I got Dh65 for the same thing. Also, there are some robes in the UAE pavilion for Dh50.”
Mehnaz said that despite the crowds, her family loves the atmosphere of the global village. “Growing up in Saudi Arabia, we used to watch all the TV shows showing the Dubai Shopping Festival and the global village,” she said. “Back then, we used to imagine it as a magical wonderland. And now, decades later, we all live in the country and are able to visit it and soak up the sights and sounds. While there, we all talk about our How grateful to be able to enjoy it.”
Earlier this week, Global Village announced its Excellence Awards. The Egyptian Pavilion was named the best pavilion in the global village this year. At the awards ceremony held at the World Parliament, the Egyptian Pavilion was appreciated for providing an authentic and enriching experience showcasing the country’s vivid culture and centuries-old traditions.
