Hulu launches new comedy series amid rave reviews this fool on Friday.Based on stand-up comedy and the early life of a comedian Chris Estradathe show cast him as Julio, a prude 30-year-old who lives in South Central Los Angeles with his strict mother.
Julio’s cousin Luis, played by fellow stand-up Frankie Quinosjust out of jail at the start of the show, the duo is a rather odd couple on screen.
The show was co-produced by a former Signal to noise ratio Star Fred Armisen, he explained what made him want to log in. “The first is Chris’s sense of humor, the way he sees the world, his experiences,” he told ABC Audio.
“For me, it’s just an exploration of that kind of culture in South Central LA. And…I mean it has a lot of dimensions, layers, depth and lightness. So I just want to see it, and then I want everyone to want to see it.”
Estrada explained: “When we marketed this, we marketed it as Friday, but by Coen BrothersSo it’s really cool to think about how the world is presented…and this perspective of the character in a cinematic, offbeat, somewhat irreverent way, as well. “
The series also starred soprano veterinary Michael Imperioliwho runs a nonprofit called Hugs Not Thugs to help gang members recover, and Michelle Ortizwho stole Julio’s firecracker ex-girlfriend Maggie’s scene.
Estrada, who was already a good friend of Quinones in the stand-up comedy days, said the rest of the colorful cast was all about finding people who felt “authentic” to the show’s uneven world.
