Leading hotel group Hyatt has announced two senior appointments for its rapidly expanding Europe, Africa and Middle East (EAME) region – Heidi Kunkel has been named Senior Vice President, Business Services, and Monique Dekker has been named Senior Vice President, Human Resources.
In a statement, Hyatt said the appointments strengthen the region’s executive team as it prepares for continued growth under the leadership of EAME Group President Javier Águila.
By 2022, 45 percent of the 120 hotels added to Hyatt’s global portfolio will be located in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The region’s contribution to Hyatt’s growth journey will continue through 2023, with 10 percent of its record 117,000 rooms expected to join the EAME market’s portfolio.
Both leaders bring extensive experience in the hospitality industry in some of Hyatt’s key growth markets, while also having strong records in advocating for and advancing fair practices in the workplace, it said.
Hyatt said the appointments of Heidi and Monique will increase the number of women represented at the highest levels of the organization as part of a deliberate strategy to attract and recruit exceptional female talent into leadership positions at its regional headquarters and hotel portfolio.
“Kunkel and Dekker are incredible talents who will play an important role in Hyatt’s continued growth at EAME,” said Javier Águila, Group President of EAME.

Kunkel will lead Hyatt’s business services function at EAME, which combines sales, revenue management, distribution strategy, corporate marketing, brand, communications and digital, as well as oversight of the World of Hyatt loyalty platform.
She joins Hilton Hotels & Resorts as Vice President, Operations, Australasia, following 15 years at Club Med, where she was responsible for commercial and operations in Asia Pacific, as well as Europe and Africa.
She has achieved enviable performance improvements in revenue, profitability, operational efficiency and employee engagement across the Pacific, South East Asia and Europe/Africa.

Regarding Decker, Hyatt said the Dutch-born executive worked at the Grand Hyatt in New York for more than 25 years. After holding various positions at Hyatt properties in Tokyo, Dusseldorf, Chicago and Singapore, she took on the coveted general manager role at Park Hyatt Vienna, the group’s most iconic hotel in Europe One of the hotels.
She concurrently served as Regional Vice President for Austria, Czech Republic, Italy and Hungary, while also serving on the group’s Global Diversity Equity and Inclusion Council and Chair of Women in Hyatt – a global initiative to accelerate and increase career opportunities For female employees, EAME alone has 13 chapters and more than 600 directly involved colleagues.
In her new role, Dekker will be responsible for achieving Hyatt’s goals as it scales to create professional opportunities for EAME’s growing workforce of more than 18,000 professionals at all levels.
