‘I do want to keep a little distance from the sport’: 8 GP champion Daniel Ricciardo wants 2023 future ahead of Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

[ad_1]

Daniel Ricciardo admits he wants to take time off from F1 at the end of the season but wants to figure it out and fix it before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Ricciardo would not continue with his McLaren team after the season. He has been underwhelming since joining the Woking-based team in 2021. So McLaren pulled the plug early and decided to axe the Australian despite having one year left on his contract.

Ricciardo’s young compatriot Oscar Piastri will succeed him at McLaren. As for Ricciardo, he admits he has no chance of remaining in F1 in 2023. The 32-year-old’s most realistic option now is to sign up as a reserve driver for one of the teams.

So far, he has been linked with substitute roles at Mercedes and Red Bull. However, there has been no clear word on his 2023 season so far. That’s something Ricciardo wants to address ahead of next month’s season finale in Abu Dhabi.

Daniel Ricciardo wants to leave F1

The last two years have been extremely difficult for Ricciardo. His move to McLaren promised a huge bonus, but he was swept away by Lando Norris two years later. Now that he’s leaving them at the end of 2022, he wants to take his time before deciding on his next move.

Ricciardo has previously said he would not be in F1 just for F1’s sake, he wanted to join a team that was competing at the front. It will be difficult because most of the big teams now have drivers on multi-year contracts. That’s why the Perth-born driver wants to stay away from the sport. However, he does want to keep in touch with what’s going on.

“There are still some things up in the air,” he said in an interview. daily mail“But it’s become clearer over time. I do want to keep a little distance from the sport, although I do want to stay connected.”

Where will Ricardo be in 2023?

Earlier this season, there were rumours that Ricciardo would be involved in other competitions. However, it is not. The former Red Bull driver insists his dream of success in F1 is stronger than ever. Now that a 2023 seat is out of the question, he will focus his full attention on his return in 2024.

By far the most likely destination for the 8 GP title is Mercedes or Red Bull. However, if he does stay in F1, it will only be a reserve driver. Regardless, everyone in the F1 community wants to see the Honey Badger back soon.
