I Have A Right Foundation Inc., an NGO based in North East Dominica, attended the 26th IAVE World Volunteer Congress in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from October 24 to October 27, 2022 , and from October 27 to October 29, 2022.

The World Volunteer Conference (WVC), usually held every two years, aims to “create an environment that encourages connection, knowledge sharing and continuous learning for all those who believe that volunteering can improve their communities and volunteer lives, and is an Strategic Assets for the Development Goals (SDGs)”.

This was the first time Dominica was represented at both conferences, with more than 1,000 participants from around the world representing all areas of the volunteering community, from individual leaders to civil society organisations, government agencies, academia and business. Overall, the Caribbean region was made up of relatively small but significant teams at both conferences this year, with representatives from Guyana, Saint Lucia, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, and ST. Saint Kitts and Nevis.

The 2022 World Volunteer Congress opened on October 24 with a gala dinner, followed by plenary sessions, forums and hands-on workshops with nearly 100 speakers, including invited speakers/panel members for the IHARF program Coordinator Lucien Alexander-Anatol’s theme was “Creating an enabling environment for youth volunteerism to flourish”.

The conference is being held for the first time in the Middle East by the Emirates Foundation, which aims to shape, guide and deliver innovative volunteering programmes that increasingly encourage community members to volunteer and have far-reaching national impact.

The Day of Good Deeds Conference, also held in Abu Dhabi, was attended by around 85 participants from over 60 countries with a similar goal of highlighting the importance of volunteerism as a catalyst for local, regional and global development
develop. Good Deeds Day (GDD) is an annual recognized global movement that provides tools, inspiration and a global network for changemakers looking to create a better world through thoughtful action. I Have A Right Foundation Inc has been the National Leader of GDD since 2019 and is part of the regional branch through the Caribbean Volunteer Exchange Network (CVX) based in Trinidad and Tobago.

Lucien Alexander-Anatol from Wesley and Auretta Warrington from Calibishie, one of IHARF’s key volunteers, agreed that these meetings were very impactful and inspiring and believed that in order to achieve social
and economic development, volunteering must receive greater socio-cultural attention.

The I Have A Right Foundation encourages business and civil society to actively participate in the Day of Good Deeds 2023, which will be recognized on April 16, 2023. However, events can be held before and after the mark day.

“As plans are being drafted for Dominica’s Day of Good Deeds in 2023, we expect substantial community engagement from other organisations and companies as well as independent volunteers. Updates will be made through
Media, we expect high turnout next year as 2022 is curtailed due to COVID-19. As the theme of Good Deeds Day 2023 says, let’s keep delivering good deeds’. “
