IELTS/TOEFL Test Preparation Lecturer at NYU Abu Dhabi NYU Summer Institute

NYU Summer Institute is a cross-cultural program aimed at raising the academic profile of highly motivated Emirati high school students who are about to start their 11th grade. The program features intensive instruction in critical thinking and writing, mathematical reasoning, college readiness and success, standardized test preparation, and leadership development and public speaking over two summer and middle school year courses.

Following a highly competitive admission process, as many as 54 program participants were selected as recipients of the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholarship for Outstanding High School Students, which enables them to attend the Summer Institute.

In this co-ed program, students gain exposure to a rich culture and a rigorous academic program that enhances their ability to enter and perform well at top English-language universities. The program begins in the summer after high school 10th grade and continues for the next 18 months with two intensive summer courses in Abu Dhabi on the NYU campus. In addition, students participate in online learning and academic refresher weekends during the academic year.

Work summary:

Instructors will oversee all academic duties of Summer Institute students during the first summer of the program (Summer 1), including instruction, grading, lesson planning, and office hours. Each section of the program will include approximately 12 hours of instruction as well as online blended learning sessions, with approximately 18 students in each section. Lecturers will also support weekend program activities as required and attend selection and graduation events as required.

main duty

  • Develop an IELTS test preparation course focusing on the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills that form the basis of the English language competency required for entry to top English-speaking universities. Units of study may include building and strengthening the core academic concepts and skills necessary to succeed in IELTS, including diagnostic and practical exams.Students will be introduced to strategies and techniques to help them master the reading, listening, writing and speaking sections of the exam
  • Taught IELTS to Abu Dhabi Summer Academy Class of 2024
  • Work with College Readiness and Success lecturers to develop courses that meet both IELTS preparation and University Readiness and Success learning outcomes
  • Attend any pre-program meetings and/or training sessions
  • Participate in teacher meetings by providing detailed feedback on student progress
  • Work closely with the Summer Institute team to ensure that both parts receive the same material delivered in a similar high quality method
  • Available for groups of elementary students who need help and other teachers working on cross-curricular or collaborative projects
  • Participate in extra-curricular activities and activities throughout the program and provide assistance as needed, which will entail leading small groups of students on excursions and trips, or supporting program operations as necessary
  • Provide ongoing and regular feedback (oral and written) to students in the classroom
  • After the summer session, each student submits extensive and detailed written feedback within 30 days of course completion for use in drafting letters of recommendation for their college applications

qualifications

Required education, certification, licensing or training

  • Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in English, TESOL, TEFL, ESL, Applied Linguistics or related discipline
  • In-person classes are available in Abu Dhabi during the dates listed below.
  • Able to provide online/blended learning instruction as needed during the dates listed below.

Preferred Education, Certification, Licensing or Training

  • Advanced Degree in Applied Linguistics, TESOL, TEFL, ESL
  • High school level English as a second language teaching experience

Required work and related experience

  • Demonstrate an interest in intercultural education and a passion for teaching
  • Experience mentoring high school students in extracurricular activities (i.e. summer camp or after school activities)
  • Assistance in managing the program prior to classes in Abu Dhabi

Preferred work and related experience

  • Work or internship experience teaching English to non-native speakers
  • Familiarity with teaching blended learning
