IFHC and ESE publish a book to celebrate the work of young UAE protectionists

The International Hobara Conservation Foundation (IFHC) and the United Arab Emirates Schools Agency (ESE), a global leader in preemptive species conservation, today announced the winners of the 2021 Young Protectionist Writers Competition. The work of 15 award-winning student teams from schools across the UAE has published a book “Stories from Our Environment”, which was unveiled at the Abu Dhabi Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX).

The Short Story Challenge was launched in the last school year by IFHC and ESE in cooperation with all schools in the UAE. The students wrote a story as a team to highlight one of the three themes: the importance of Houbara in UAE culture, the role of ecologists, and the protection of desert species and their threats. To promote collaboration and creativity, these teams include writers, designers, editors and illustrators.

60 schools submitted entries and 30 of them are on the long-term list. Fifteen winning teams were selected to represent the fifteen years since the establishment of IFHC, and the winning stories and their illustrations were published in the book.

His Excellency Jameela bint Salem Mesbeh Al Muhairi, Minister of State for Public Education and Chairman of the UAE School Board, said: “ESE is committed to raising students’ awareness of the importance of protecting the Houbara bustard, in line with the directives of the government. The agency also tries to involve them in conservation efforts.

HE Al Muhairi pointed out that publishing students’ articles on houbara protection is a way to inspire them to educate their peers about the importance of houbara in relation to UAE heritage. He added: “The Houbara Demonstration Education Program aims to train future environmental protection advocates. This is an important step towards achieving this goal and lays a solid foundation for our country’s success in achieving sustainable development in the next 50 years. The basics.”

His Excellency Majid Ali Al Mansouri, Managing Director of IFHC, said: “I want to thank all the schools and students who participated in the competition. The standards are very high and it is difficult to select the winners. I congratulate them; it is our honor to publish their stories. Written by young people for young people, parents and conservation communities, they truly show young people’s passion for protecting the world around them. Protecting our environment and our heritage is a priority for the UAE, and the quality of the stories we publish today shows the future In good hands.”

Through its collaborative and innovative method of storytelling, short stories provide unique insights into how students today perceive the world around them. This book aims to inspire young people to become champions of the environment, and its global goal is to promote sustainable development, biodiversity, ecological protection and protection.

This illustrated book contains a kaleidoscope-like emotional story, seeing the family enter the Arabian desert, surrounded by rich wildlife and natural habitats, between the antelope herd and the desert oasis, the native birds are found to be endangered in nature The story of habitat brings life to a level that resonates with young and older environmentalists.

17-year-old Sheikha Ali Al-Naddas Al-Ketbi of AlBradi Elementary and Secondary Education School and her co-authors wrote “Our Ship, We Will Protect It”, and she is commenting on her role in bringing this book to life , Said: “This experience has enriched my literary side and released my imagination. It encouraged me to apply my artistic skills to electronic painting, which played an important role in the development of all aspects of my personality. I I hope to have the opportunity to participate in such a meaningful and interesting exercise again.”

In addition to Al-Ketbi’s insights, Amer Mohamed Butaina, an 8-year-old student from the British School in Aspen Heights, Abu Dhabi, said: “I really think this is one of the best games. It provides a unique educational value. It motivates me to want to learn more about Houbara and IFHC’s efforts to protect it sustainably. I now realize the importance of understanding our role as the next generation to support these efforts. I feel my participation Proud, I look forward to participating in more similar events.”

The Houbara educational model uses Houbara as the flagship species of educational content to explore issues surrounding sustainability and heritage. The model uses a blended learning method that combines technology and innovative educational tools to create learning experiences for students across the UAE. In addition to informing students, the program aims to train tomorrow’s environmentalists who are in line with the UAE’s sustainable development goals. To reflect this national priority, the Houbara model is now fully integrated into the national curriculum of the UAE.
