Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is about to open an offshore campus in Abu Dhabi. According to reports, the founding IITs – Delhi, Madras, Karagpur and others will run the International IITs for 10 years until they become self-sustaining. Therefore, these IIT faculty members will be employed by the founding IITs.
Some IITs are receiving requests to set up campuses abroad from countries in the Middle East and South Asia. IIT Kharagpur is looking forward to opening a campus in Malaysia, while IIT Madras is looking to open a campus in Tanzania.
Last January, the University Grants Council (UGC) amended its rules to allow “outstanding institutions” to set up campuses abroad. These changes are made in accordance with the New Education Policy 2020 and after approval by the Ministry of Education, Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs.
The center formed a 17-member committee in February this year, headed by K. Radhakrishnan, IIT Council Executive Chairman, to plan the offshore IIT campus.
