Lando Norris admitted his McLaren The team fell victim to hindsight after employing a sub-par strategy at Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
This resulted in McLaren failing to beat Alpine in the race for fourth place in the F1 Constructors’ Championship in the season finale, despite being 14 points behind its rival on the aggregate.
Despite the beating Esteban Ocon By taking the checkered flag in sixth, Norris showed he believed the Alpine rider enjoyed a stronger strategy by completing his last two pit stops on the hard tyres, rather than reverting to the medium tyres.
“I’m glad it’s not a P7,” Norris said. “I’ve done enough there this year, but actually I’m really happy. It was close, it was a tough game.
“The rhythm is good, but Esteban [Ocon] It was a lot faster in the last few laps, almost two seconds per lap, because I put on the shoes so fast.
“medium-hard-hard seemed to be a better strategy than the medium-hard-medium we had, so maybe in hindsight we didn’t make the best decision, but that was hindsight, not what we knew before the weekend.”
However, Norris backed McLaren’s other decisions, joking that his ability to set the fastest lap of the race “must mean we are the fastest car out there”.
“Honestly, from my point of view and from the point of view of the whole team, we’ve done a great job all season,” Norris added. “We just don’t have a good enough car to show more than what we do.”
“But I’m really happy with the work ethic and the improvements we’ve made, so there’s definitely a lot of positives.”
