ABU DHABI: Indian grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi won the 28th Abu Dhabi Chess Masters, beating Spain’s David Anton Guijjaro here on Thursday.
The 18-year-old beat the Spaniard by 7.5 points in the ninth and final round.
Arjun is also unbeaten in nine rounds, half a point ahead of Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov.
The Warangal lad is currently number 3 on the live ratings charts in India and his recent performance has been impressive with 35 Elo points after your recent Indian Chess Olympiad.
In Abu Dhabi, Arjun is the clear winner with 6 wins and a draw in the other 3.
His victories came from compatriots Rohit Krishna, Deep Sengupta, Raunak Sadhwani, China’s top seed Wang Hao, Alexsandr Indjic (Serbia) and Guijjaro. He was alongside Evgeny Tomashevky (Russia), Jorden van Forest and Ray Robson.
A group of players including Indians Nihal Sarin, SP Sethuraman, Karthikeyan Murali and Aryan Chopra, all GMs and FIDE Grandmaster Aditya Samant scored 6.5 points.
Dutchman Jorden van Foreest finished third, followed by American Ray Robson and Nihal in sixth, followed by Sethuraman, Samant, Karthikeyan Murali and Chopra in the top 10.
