A man who tried to smuggle gold by dipping a bath towel in liquid gold was arrested by customs officials at Kochi airport, officials were notified on Thursday.
The accused has been identified as Fahad, 26, of Thrissur, who arrived at Cochin Airport from Dubai by Spice Jet (SG 54) on October 10.
Customs officials said it was the first time they had witnessed this method of smuggling the precious metal.
“Fahd attempted to smuggle gold by dipping bath towels in liquid gold and carefully wrapping them. During inspections, customs officers suspected that there were wet towels in his bag,” the officials said.
The officer added that when the defendant was asked about the wet towel, he replied that he had taken a shower before going to the airport.
“Customs officers had a hard time believing his explanation. He then carefully checked the contents. Five gold-soaked bath towels were seized from his bag,” the official added.
“It will be a few days before we know how much gold is in these towels, and scientific testing is underway. Customs authorities have clarified that the gold was extracted using a very sophisticated method that cannot be revealed for security reasons,” the customs official said. Say.
