The replacement plane of Indian airline SpiceJet arrived in Karachi on Tuesday night after the airline’s Dubai-bound flight made an emergency landing in Pakistan.

The replacement aircraft, a Boeing 737 Max, landed at 5.45pm Pakistan time and will fly passengers to Dubai.

The plane, which was flying from New Delhi to Dubai, landed safely after being diverted to the Pakistani city early Tuesday morning after the lights failed. There were more than 150 passengers on board.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has since ordered an investigation into the incident on Tuesday.

“On 05 July 2022, M/s SpiceJet B737-8 Max aircraft VT-MXG, while operating Delhi-Dubai flight SG-011, the crew observed an abnormal decrease in the fuel level in the left side fuel tank. They conducted related Not OK” checklist, but the fuel level keeps dwindling. PIC decided to divert the aircraft to Karachi (KHI). The aircraft diverted in coordination with ATC and landed safely at KHI,” the DGCA statement said.

SpiceJet said the flight was diverted en route to Dubai at an altitude of 5,000 feet. ANI accessed conversations between the SpiceJet pilot and ATC Karachi, which showed the pilot requested a precautionary landing of the plane after a fuel leak was suspected.

“Heard SpiceJet pilot told ATC Karachi plane had fuel leak, required plane to make precautionary landing,” ATC talk read ANI access.

“Karachi ATC confirmed whether he had any dangerous items on board. The pilot’s reaction was negative. Later Karachi ATC confirmed that the SpiceJet landed two minutes later,” the conversation further read.

The plane landed safely at Karachi Airport at around 8:00 am local time, 53 minutes after take-off.

“SpiceJet has been on the ground for the past four hours. Passengers are being attended to. The aircraft has stopped in the designated area where engineers are assessing the problem,” Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) officials said.

“On July 5, 2022, a SpiceJet B737 aircraft operating flight SG-11 (Delhi-Dubai) was diverted to Karachi due to a faulty indicator light. The aircraft landed safely in Karachi and passengers disembarked safely,” said a spokesperson for the airline. No emergency was declared and the plane landed normally at Karachi airport, according to SpiceJet.

“No emergency was declared and the aircraft landed normally. There were no previous reports of any malfunction of the aircraft. Passengers were given refreshments. A replacement aircraft was flown to Karachi and will take passengers to Dubai,” a SpiceJet spokesman said.

Meanwhile, another plane of Indian low-cost carrier SpiceJet reported a malfunction on its Kandela-Mumbai flight on Tuesday. This is the second incident involving the airline on Tuesday.

Earlier on Saturday, a domestic flight made an emergency landing after the cabin filled with smoke shortly after taking off for the central city of Jabalpur, the airline said.

A senior DGCA official said they were investigating all six SpiceJet accidents reported in the past 17 days.

“We are concerned for the safety of our passengers and have formed a team to thoroughly investigate all incidents and submit a report as soon as possible,” he said.

In the DGCA’s monthly report, SpiceJet ranked second in terms of flight cancellations in May.

On June 19, two incidents were reported on two separate SpiceJet flights. First, a Delhi-bound flight with more than 185 passengers on board caught fire shortly after take-off from Patna airport and had to make an emergency landing. The airline said a bird hit their fan blade.

In a separate incident on the same day, a SpiceJet Bombardier Q400 Dash 8 flying from Delhi to Jabalpur made an emergency landing in Delhi because the cabin could not be pressurized as it ascended.
