According to India’s Minister of Electricity and New and Renewable Energy, India and the United Arab Emirates are close to reaching an important agreement.
Raj Kumar Singh is visiting Gulf Arab oil producers for the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) General Assembly. He said the deal was awaiting final approval. He did not provide any details about the timetable.
Singh said there was an important agreement to interconnect the electricity grids of the UAE and India. He also said this would be done under the One Sun One World One Grid initiative (OSOWOG), which involves a group of countries working together to develop a renewable energy network.
“Both parties have agreed. We are confident it will happen,” he said.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi first came up with the OSOWOG initiative to transfer renewable energy through grid connection.
The UAE has also expressed its willingness to invest in renewable energy (RE) projects in India, including solar and wind, Singh said.
India and the UAE also signed a memorandum of understanding on the production of green hydrogen using renewable energy. This was announced on Twitter by the Indian Embassy in the UAE on Friday.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation declined immediate comment.
Last year, the Gulf region signed a comprehensive trade agreement with India. It aims to increase bilateral non-oil trade to $100 billion over the next five years.
Singh supported the UAE in hosting the COP28 climate conference at this year’s COP28. He also supported Sultan Al Jaber, Head of ADNOC, UAE Climate Envoy and COP28 Chair-designate.
Al-Jaber, who also serves as the UAE’s minister of industry and advanced technology, helped found Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy company Masdar in 2006.
The UAE and other Gulf energy producers have called for a realistic transition in which hydrocarbons will still play a role in energy security, while committing to decarbonisation.
