Andy Levin, an outgoing Democratic Congressman, warned that India is at risk of transforming into a Hindu nationalist state
In his final speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, the 62-year-old Congressman, describing himself as a “lifelong human rights advocate,” emphasized the importance of human rights global.
He specifically pointed out India, expressing concern that it might be at risk of evolving into a Hindu nationalist State instead of preserving its secular democracy status as the world’s largest democracy.
Despite being a lover of Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and other religions born in India, he stressed the necessity to protect the rights of all people in the country, regardless of their religious affiliations – be they Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, Christians, or Jains.
He also spoke about the situation in Burma (Myanmar) and Bangladesh, expressing support for the Burmese people’s efforts to resist repression and visiting Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
During a special Congressional briefing titled “India’s Brutal Persecution of Kashmir,” he called for international attention to the issue, criticizing Prime Minister Modi’s approach to human rights and democracy in India.
The Congressman has been vocal about his love for India but critical of the current government’s actions, as he wants to see the country’s democracy flourish for generations to come.
Following his defeat in the Democratic primary, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised his skills as a legislator and his commitment to championing workers’ rights and human rights.
