Authorities in Indiana arrested a man and two teenage girls who died five years ago while hiking near a small community in northern Indiana in an unsolved case.

Indiana Police Chief Doug Carter said at a news conference that Richard Matthew Allen, 50, was arrested Friday on two counts of murder in the February 2017 killings of 14-year-old Liberty German and 13-year-old Abigail Williams, whose case has plagued Indiana. A city of approximately 3,000 people in Indiana.

Libby and Abby’s bodies were found in rough terrain near a hiking trail on February 14, 2017, before disappearing a day later while hiking on the school day.

Relatives of one of the teens dropped them off on a hiking trail near the Monon High Bridge, outside their hometown of Delphi, about 60 miles northwest of Indianapolis.

They were reported missing on the evening of February 13, 2017, because they failed to show up at their scheduled meeting place.

Their deaths were ruled a double murder, but more than five years after the killings, police have not revealed how the girls died or described the evidence they had in their cases.

In the days after the killing, investigators released two blurry photos of a suspect walking on an abandoned railway bridge that the girls had visited, and a clip of a man believed to be the suspect saying “Downhill” recording.

Authorities have since released two sketches of the suspected killer, one of which was based on video from Libby’s phone in April 2019, which is believed to be more accurate than the one released in July 2017.

Police also released video in April 2019 showing the man allegedly killing teenagers walking on an abandoned railway bridge that the girls had visited.

The suspect’s brief video, photos and audio came from Libby’s cell phone. Authorities hailed her as a hero for documenting potentially important evidence before she was killed.

In December 2021, state police announced that they were seeking information from people who had been in contact with people who used fictitious online profiles to communicate with young girls.

State police said at the time that investigators investigating their deaths found a fictitious online profile called “anthony_shots” that was used on Snapchat, Instagram and other social media platforms from 2016 to 2017.
