Innovative performances ready for Emmy takeoff

[ad_1]

Baby J is back on the streets! Five years after the huge success of his special “Kid Gorgeous,” John Mulaney came back with his third Netflix April 25 comedy special “John Mulaney: Baby J.” The show, previously titled “From Scratch,” during his comedy tour, offers insight into Mulaney’s high-profile, scandal-ridden year. A public rehab, a divorce announcement and a surprise baby have made the comedian the talk of the tabloids.

The 80-minute special further demonstrates Mulaney’s prodigious talents as a comedian. There’s no denying that the man knows how to crack jokes and throw punchlines. His way of speaking and delivery made him a unique voice and accelerated his success. “Baby J” contains some brilliantly crafted sequences, including his star-studded interventions, his frustration at not being recognized in rehab, and his quest to quickly buy and sell Rolex watches for drug money. What’s most unique about this special is Mulaney’s willingness to paint himself in a deeply negative light, especially when it comes to his drug addiction. His reputation as a Catholic boy in a suit, wacky moves and jokes to any crowd landed him in a role that was completely removed from his actual identity.

At one point, Mulaney is quick to quip, “cuteness is a prison,” which aptly sums up the show’s entire theme. “Baby J” is an experiment in vulnerability, the extent to which an artist can act both as an entertainer and as a real person. When you’re as popular as Mulaney, every move is scrutinized and it feels like it could ruin your entire career. Mulaney’s high-profile scandal finally cost him away from a role that catapulted him to success, but ultimately a lie.

Compared to what I’ve seen of him in 2021, “Baby J” leans more towards Mulani’s darker side. The Rolex story is a new addition, and the part about praying for a grandparent’s death is more about Mulani’s addictive need for attention than the previous show (which felt more confessional). “Baby J” is slightly less personal and intimate than the original tour version, but also tighter and more focused on putting the John Mulaney of the previous version to rest.

lookWill Emmy Winner ‘Bo Burnham: Inside’ Win ACE Eddie?

Mulaney’s new special continues the evolution of the increasingly popular comedy special: a more personal, less performative show. The genre came to the forefront Hannah Gadsby“Nannette,” followed by shows like Jenny Slate“stage fright” and Jerrod Carmichael“Rotaniel”. burnham further innovated the field with his acclaimed “Inside”. “Inside” and “Baby J” run parallel to each other. Both find their respective comedians reinterpreting their art through their finest skills.

“Baby J” came out at the right time, continuing Mulaney’s Emmy winning streak. The comedian has 18 nominations but has only won twice: once in 2011 as a writer for “Saturday Night Live” and in 2018 for “Kid Gorgeous.” In recent years, “Inside”, “Rothaniel” and “Nanette” have all won awards. The “Baby J” material is so in line with recent trends that it’s easy to continue the pattern.

The bigger challenge will be bringing home the best variety special, something Burnham has managed to pull off, but usually in the form of concert films and james corden Special offer. However, with a spring release date and a very public story behind it, “Baby J” is poised to deliver a solid Emmy for Mulaney. He went from “a comedian’s comedian” to one of the country’s most popular stand-up artists, performing over 100 shows for “From the Ground Up.” He’s both a people favorite and a critics favorite, which will likely translate to Emmy voters.

“Baby J” isn’t the perfect special, but it’s well worth a watch. It is rare for a performer to be face to face with a large audience on such a public stage. Mulaney is playing the vulnerable role, forging a new comedic role after breaking out of his lovable cage. But he’s creating a new beginning, embodied by calling himself Baby J. All that’s left is to find out what he’ll be when he grows up.
