Newcastle: Eddie Howe believes Loris Karius has something to prove at Newcastle United, but not for the reasons many believe.

The Magpies’ manager gave the German goalkeeper a fresh start in the Premier League last summer after his controversial suspension at Liverpool was cut short. The 29-year-old was signed on a free transfer following Caldalo’s injury, with the club’s coaching staff looking to improve third option Mark Gillespie.

The move has raised eyebrows, especially given the high-profile mistake that goes so far with Karius’ name. Of course, the new Manchester United signing is to blame for Liverpool’s two-goal loss to Real Madrid in the 2018 Champions League final, a game that has haunted players’ careers ever since.

However, while Howe believes the players came to Tyneside to prove something, it wasn’t because of that night in Kyiv four years ago.

“I don’t think he’s had day-to-day contact with the team for a while,” he said of Karius, who is expected to be on the bench for AFC Bournemouth’s visit to St James tomorrow. garden.

“I think he has improved and gotten better in every training session we have. Of course, he gets along very well with the team.

“You don’t want to let in a guy who doesn’t want to play and can’t play. He can do both. He’s driving and training really well.”

Asked about Karius’ Champions League final blunder, Howe said: “I haven’t really looked into his career, he’s been here for a short time. But every player who comes on has a point to prove, that Depends how you look at it.

“Of course we want to help him to be the best he can be. From what I’ve seen in training, he’s impressed me not only with his performance, but with his demeanor and how he The demeanor. He’s fitting into a team that has a good feel for them, so he’s a perfect fit.”

Karius’ move came only when usual backup goalkeeper Dallow suffered an ankle injury that looks set to keep him out of action for the next two months.

It is understood that after sending Martin Dubravka to Manchester United on loan, the club did not believe Gillespie could provide enough cover for in-form No. 1 Nick Pope, so they opted for Karius.

Howe said: “The way Darlow was injured was weird. He had just been doing goalkeeping training with two or three goalkeepers and sprained his ankle during a normal shot.

“With this news, and with our 25-man squad still open at that stage, we thought it would be wise to choose someone with experience to complement our existing goalkeepers, and when we looked at the goalkeepers available, Lloris was outstanding. The candidate, it’s a rather small pool.

“He’s a really good age and has had some incredible experiences in his career. He’s trained well.”

Meanwhile, Howe is keeping a close eye on whether the key trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Alan St. Maxime and Callum Wilson will return to the game with the Cherries.

He said: “Everyone has improved but I’ll leave my team news until we get it. It’s been a tough time for us, but hopefully we can get out of it. They’ve been great for us. Important players and we need them back as soon as possible.”

Of the three, Brazilian Guimaraes is understood to be the closest player to a return to the Premier League ahead of next week’s international break.
