The channel’s broadcaster said on Monday that two Anglo-Iranian journalists working in the UK for an independent Farsi-language channel had received “credible” death threats from Iranian security forces.
Volant Media, the London-based broadcaster of Iran’s international TV channel, said in a statement that two of its journalists had received “death threats from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps” in what it called a “dangerous escalation” in the suppression of independent media.
“These are state-sponsored threats to British journalists,” a Volant Media spokesman was quoted as saying.
He added that the Revolutionary Guard “cannot be allowed to suppress a free press in the UK”.
The channel is covering anti-regime protests in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini for allegedly breaking strict women’s dress codes.
Volant Media said the two journalists had received a formal “warning of a credible threat to the lives of them and their families” from London’s Metropolitan Police.
Police have also notified other journalists of the threat, Volant Media said.
“We do not comment on protective security issues related to any specific individual,” the Met said in a reply to AFP.
