Baquer Namazi, US and Iraqi citizens from Imprisoned in Tehran On Wednesday, more than six years later, arrived urgently medical treatement in the UAE.

Mr. Namazi’s lawyer, Jared Genser, confirmed his arrival and said he had been examined at the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi. He is expected to accept carotid endarterectomy His family had previously said the need to “remove a severe blockage in his left internal carotid artery that put him at high risk of stroke”.

“The extraordinary support provided by the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi and the generosity of the UAE government in hosting the Namazis cannot be overstated. They feel so lucky and grateful,” Mr Genser tweeted an 85-year-old Photo of Mr Namazi being welcomed by his son Babak upon arrival in Abu Dhabi.

Mr. Namazi, a former UN official, was convicted in Iran in 2016 of “cooperating with a hostile government” and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Iranian authorities released him in 2018 on medical grounds and closed his case in 2020, commuting his sentence to serve a sentence but effectively barring him from leaving the country.

He was finally allowed to fly to Muscat on a Royal Oman Air Force flight on Wednesday before heading to Abu Dhabi for treatment.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken also welcomed Mr Namazi’s release, saying: “Barker asks us to express our deepest gratitude to all those who worked tirelessly to secure his release. My heart goes out to all those who helped him achieve his freedom. Friends and partners are grateful.”

He particularly thanked the UAE and Oman for their assistance in treating Mr. Namazi and transferring him out of Iran.

“We look forward to his full recovery and welcome him back to the United States,” Mr Blinken said.

Mr. Namazi was detained after being lured to Iran and promised he would be able to meet his son Siamak Namazi, who was detained by authorities in 2016 on charges of cooperating with the United States.

Siamak Namazi is now Iran’s longest-serving US-Iranian prisoner.

Mr. Blinken said Mr. Namazi’s detention was wrong.

“He was brutally detained while trying to secure the release of his son Siamak Namazi, who was also wrongfully detained in Iran for seven years,” he said.

“However, our work is far from done. We remain committed to ensuring the liberty of all American citizens wrongfully detained in Iran and around the world.”

Siamese prayer One of four Iranian-Americans held in Tehran. This week, he was released from prison on furlough, but remains banned from travel and could be sent back to detention at any time.

Neda Shargi, sister of Emad Shargi, who was held in Iran for espionage and sentenced to 10 years in prison, welcomed the news of Mr. Namazi’s release.

“We are ecstatic at the news of Baquer Namazi’s freedom and his son Siamak’s furlough. We continue to pray for them so that their families can finally be together,” she tweeted.

“We hope that the United States will also ensure Emad’s freedom; instead, he remains an innocent American wrongly imprisoned in Iran. We urge the U.S. government to do everything possible to bring him home.”
