Irish cricket announced on Wednesday that a 15-man squad, led by Laura Delany, will compete in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup qualifiers to be held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, from September 18 to 25.

DUBLIN, 31 August (IANS): Irish cricket announced on Wednesday that a 15-man squad, led by Laura Delany, will compete in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup qualifiers to be held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, from September 18 to 25.

Ireland will host three T20I races from September 5 to 8 ahead of the competition. The 15 members of the Women’s T20 World Cup qualifier will then fly to Dubai for a preparation camp from September 10 to 14, including a warm-up match against Papua New Guinea on September 13.

“We’ve been busy with white-ball cricket for a few months now and will soon be playing South Africa, Australia, Pakistan, Holland and Scotland – and while each series has its own importance, the plan has been moving towards The direction of this qualifier is going. As a squad, we want to compete on the highest stage possible and the T20 World Cup in South Africa is one of the occasions where we want to qualify.”

“The last time we played in the White Ball World Cup was in November 2018, a lot has changed and improved in the years that followed, and we feel it’s much better today. Introducing a professional contract, appointing a full-time support and coaching staff , investment in training time, facilities and, of course, qualification for the ICC Women’s Championship, has dramatically changed the landscape of our women’s performance team.”

“Indeed, we entered this qualifier with a fresh sense of direction and mentality. Although this team is relatively young, it is a competitive group eager to contribute, perform well and impress ,” said Carrie Archer, president of the organization’s National Women’s Trials.

Ireland are in Group A with Bangladesh, the United States and Scotland, while Papua New Guinea, Thailand, UAE and Zimbabwe are in Group B. The top two teams of the two groups will advance to the semi-finals, and the winners of the two semi-finals will advance to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup South Africa in February 2023.

The group stage will be held from September 18th to 21st, with the semi-finals on September 23rd and the final on September 25th. The Sheikh Zayed Cricket Ground and the adjoining Tolerance Oval will be the venue for qualifying matches.

“We have a series against Scotland ahead of the game and will be looking to build on the progress we have made this summer. As always, being able to build on Eimear Richardson’s experience is a welcome opportunity and we are delighted to have several A player should be fully fit after a recent injury.”
