The International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) has launched a new initiative, the Irena NewGen Renewable Energy Accelerator (NewGen), to support young entrepreneurs and innovators driving the renewable energy transition.
NewGen will provide capacity building, mentorship and other resources to youth-led programs and start-ups that are developing innovative solutions to drive the adoption of renewable energy globally.
Irena’s initiative, backed by the UAE, was unveiled at the Youth Energy Forum World Utility Congress at the Taqa Youth Council in Abu Dhabi.

The initiative was developed in collaboration with Social Alpha, an India-based non-profit organization supporting social start-ups, and the Enel Foundation, a global non-profit organization focused on supporting the development of research and research, primarily in the energy sector. As knowledge partners, Social Alpha and the Enel Foundation will provide technical expertise and mentorship to help young entrepreneurs and innovators succeed.
“A rapid transition to renewable energy is critical to the future of our planet and young entrepreneurs play a vital role in driving this change,” said Francesco La Camera, Director General of Irena. “By launching NewGen, we are Giving a new generation of renewable energy leaders the resources they need to meet the pressing challenges of our time.”
NewGen will be open to youth-led projects and start-ups, focusing on innovative solutions in areas such as energy storage, grid integration and energy efficiency. Selected participants will receive training, mentorship, and other resources to help them develop and scale their solutions. They will also have the opportunity to compete for the Irena Youth Award, which will provide financial support to the top 5 solutions.

The accelerator is part of Irena’s wider efforts to support the acceleration of the global energy transition driven by renewable energy.
