Our beloved Buccaneers are one of the most boring NFL teams.
Joe hates the reality of typing.
Of course, Joe’s fascination with the Buccaneers hasn’t diminished or made the team any less excited, but to team officials, what other fans think may matter.
Todd Bowles? Nice guy, nice guy, smart guy, but when it comes to NFL head coaches, he’s in the boring class.
Team Glazer?Their disdain for the spotlight is counterbalanced by Joe’s interest in going vegan or giving up big storm beer and owl wings.
General Manager Jason Lichter? His public persona is not as charismatic as some general managers. No knock on Licht. He wasn’t hired for that role.
At quarterback, the Bucs have little appeal at quarterback; Baker Mayfield is unpopular, but not enough to be universally hated. Celtrask is a quiet nobody.
Tampa Bay’s big receivers have also been quiet. Mike Evans used to do cool interviews with Michael Rapoport and Richie Eisen, but those interviews disappeared years ago. Evans has been a bit anti-media since 2019. Chris Godwin? Great player with a soft personality.
Running back Rachaad White, a guy who seems to welcome every possible interview opportunity, is no playoff Lenny in the glamor department, and has done almost nothing amazing on the field.
Ironically, iconic Bucs linebacker Lavonte David, the man who literally hides heavy knock on the door The camera has become the public face of the Buccaneers in 2017. David is more entertaining than ever behind the mic, but when it comes to entertaining and engaging fans, he’s a mediocre guy.
Devin White? He wants to get out of town.
Joe isn’t here to scan the roster and cast shadows. But Joe wondered if the Glazers and Lichter would be very interested in University of Texas super-stallion running back Billyen Robinson and the excitement he could bring to the Buccaneers.
Sure, good teams don’t draft players for the sake of selling tickets and getting exposure, but if management likes more exciting college players as much as they like low-key, quiet players, will they consider them?
How excited would Tampa Bay fans be if the Buccaneers were to draft Robinson in the first round next week, a guy who would be a favorite in the national fantasy football draft? Will the NFL schedulers (in partnership with the TV networks) give the Bucs extra prime-time games as a result? maybe two?
“We’re entertainers. We’re in the entertainment business,” former Bucs head coach Raheem Morris said in 2010.
If anyone among the Bucs’ current power brokers believes that narrative, Joe believes many at One Buc Palace will be eager to make a decision for Robinson on draft night, given the opportunity.
