Masalmah, 39, died on Thursday in a hospital in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

According to Palestinian prisoners’ groups, before the prison authorities agreed to transfer him to the Soroka Hospital in Beer al-Sabaa, Masalmah complained of severe abdominal pain during two months in the Naqab prison in southern Israel, where he was diagnosed with a terminal illness. The Palestinian Authority Detainees Affairs Committee said in a statement statement On Thursday, Masalmah was “killed” by the Israeli authorities’ “systemic medical negligence policy” against him.

Similarly, the Palestinian Prisoners Club Said It believes that the Israeli occupation is responsible for the deaths of former prisoners and condemns what it calls the “crime of medical negligence”, which has long been carried out against hundreds of sick prisoners in Israeli prisons.

The Israeli authorities released Masalmah on February 15, 2021, and about a year ago he completed the 20-year sentence he was sentenced to during the second uprising in 2002.

He was officially diagnosed with leukemia on January 10.

After his release, Masalmah was transferred to the Israeli Hospital Hadassah in Jerusalem, where his health continued to deteriorate rapidly. A week ago, he was taken to Ramallah Istishari Hospital, where he died.

According to Addameer, a prison rights organization, there are 4,650 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli occupation prisons, including 200 children and 520 administrative detainees, who are being held without trial or charge.

Most Palestinians regard them as political prisoners detained because of Israeli military occupation or resistance.

According to the Palestinian Authority, more than 500 male and female Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons suffer from diseases, and dozens of them suffer from cancer.

Palestinian human rights organizations have long condemned what they call “deliberate medical negligence” and have recorded the deaths of dozens of sick Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody since 1967.
