Israeli defense contractor Rafael unveiled its high-power laser weapon system, Iron Beam, for the first time at the International Defense Exhibition (IDEX 2023) in Abu Dhabi last month.
Iron Beam is designed to neutralize moderate threats such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), rockets, artillery and mortar rounds using directed energy weapons of 100 kilowatts or greater.
Those operating the system can choose whether to use standard kinetic missiles or the Iron Beam’s laser — which, according to Rafael, offers a lower cost per shot and minimizes collateral damage. Another advantage of the system is its unlimited magazines.
“We can actually focus the beam down to the diameter of a coin at a range of 10 kilometers,” said Ran Gozali, executive vice president of the Army-Navy division at Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. defense magazine.
“When you do a surface-to-air intercept, you have an air turbulence effect that spreads the rays,” Gozali said. “We compensate for that in the transmitter to really focus the beam on the target for a few seconds.”
The system is designed to support the world-renowned Iron Dome anti-missile defense system, designed to intercept short-range threats.
