Israelis sentenced to death in UAE return home

Fida Kiwan, an Israeli woman from Haifa who was jailed for drug trafficking last year and initially faced the death penalty in the United Arab Emirates, has been pardoned by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Release her in honor of Ramadan.

Fida Kewan was arrested in Abu Dhabi last March, charged with drug trafficking and sentenced to death. Her sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment by a United Arab Emirates court.

Over the past year, her family, including her mother, siblings, have been in contact with the office of Jerusalem President Isaac Herzog, claiming she was the victim of a ruse and are working to secure her released.

Herzog submitted a personal humanitarian appeal to the UAE president a few weeks ago, and in recent days the president’s office and the Israeli embassy in the UAE, led by Ambassador Amir Hayek, have been working with Gulf authorities on the technicalities of Kiwan’s release. cooperation and return to Israel.

“We thank the President of the country for his commitment to this operation. We also thank the UAE Prince Sheikh bin Zayed for his pardon during Ramadan,” Kiwan’s lawyer said in a statement.
