IT skills gaps driving technology investment decisions: study

Nearly three-quarters (73%) of senior IT leaders agree that acquiring IT talent has never been harder, and almost all (98%) say attracting IT talent affects their organization’s technology investment choices.

As a result, IT talent acquisition challenges are now seriously influencing technology investment decisions, according to new research released by Salesforce’s MuleSoft.

The 2022 Pulse of IT Leaders report shows that today’s IT leaders are using technology to create more human-centric experiences for their employees and customers. A majority (86%) of senior IT leaders now say that the experience an organization provides for its employees and customers is as important as its products and services, with four in five agreeing to improve customer-facing (86%) and employee-facing (85%) %) technology is critical to their organization’s competition.

Economic headwinds

“Evolving economic headwinds have made it even more important for technology to succeed in all aspects of the business, including sales, service, marketing, commercial and IT,” said Matt McLarty, MuleSoft Global Field Chief Technology Officer.

“As IT leaders struggle to fill roles to support this additional demand, the traditional playbook is being called into question. Today’s IT leaders must turn to broader, company-wide process improvements that drive innovation and empower users through automation experience and drive efficient growth.”

IT talent acquisition pressure

Almost nine in 10 (87%) senior IT leaders agree that investing in people is very important. As a result, the majority of respondents plan to invest in improving IT staff well-being (82%) and upskilling (78%) over the next 12 months, both of which lead to increases in IT staff (68%). The report shows:

• “The Great Resignation” Created a Skills Gap in IT: Nearly all (98%) of senior IT leaders said the “Great Resignation” created a skills gap in their organization’s IT function, primarily in IT and Solutions architecture (60%), and cloud and infrastructure management (45%).

• Organizations are embracing automation and self-service initiatives: Many senior IT leaders are turning to automation and self-service initiatives to address widening skills gaps. Across industries, 58% of organizations are automating tasks and processes, and 53% are providing non-technical employees with automation tools to meet their own needs.

• IT leaders are measuring on user experience: More than half now measure on employee productivity (52%), while many also measure on cost reduction and optimization (50%), customer experience (48%) and employee experience (46%).

Process improvement

While creating experiences is critical, human-centric IT and business strategies require effective processes to be successful. More than half of IT leaders (54%) believe that workflow between IT and business teams could be significantly improved. The report also shows:

• Existing IT processes are the bottleneck: Nine in 10 (91%) senior IT leaders say existing IT processes are hindering productivity. Process challenges are also reported to have a negative impact on innovation (91%), technology adoption (92%), customer experience (92%) and employee experience (93%).

• Process improvement on the agenda: Nearly half (46%) of senior IT leaders say improving processes is their organization’s main priority over the next 12 months.

Fusion

• Converged teams for process efficiency: Most respondents want to create converged teams to improve processes and solve process-oriented challenges. More than two-thirds (69%) of organizations have created or are rolling out converged teams, and 22% plan to do so within the next 12 months.

Automation and low-code and no-code tools

Through technology empowerment and support to drive business growth, organizations are using best-in-class technology to create new customer and employee experiences. While this strategy improves agility, four in five (81 percent) senior IT leaders agree that this approach means their organization is struggling with IT complexity. more importantly:

• Integration challenges remain: Most senior IT leaders believe data or systems integration projects are too time-consuming (66%) and too expensive (69%). At the same time, more than two-thirds (68%) recognize that a lack of data or system integration can lead to a disconnected customer experience. As a result, almost all (98%) of senior IT leaders say new investments are influenced by the ability of tools to integrate with existing technologies.

• Companies are adopting low-code and no-code tools: Many senior IT leaders are turning to low-code and no-code tools to enable business users to build and test new experiences. Almost all organizations (96%) currently use low-code and no-code tools, and 36% plan to increase their use in the next 12 months.

• Rising automation maturity, but room for improvement: Many organizations have implemented automation to enhance customer experience and product quality. Two-thirds of organizations (67%) have largely or fully automated their IT operations, and many have introduced similar levels of automation in other business functions—including customer support (59%), finance (60%), Marketing (58%), Sales (56%) and Human Resources (55%). However, fully automated processes are still low – an average of 23% of organisations say they have been able to achieve this across business functions.

“The current economic climate leaves IT leaders with no choice – they must do more with less. These tools can enable more users to become digital builders, helping their organizations grow while increasing efficiency. By automating processes where feasible, Leaders can realize value faster and innovate faster,” added McLarty. arab trade news agency
