Cherif Traore after receiving a rotten banana as a Christmas present from a team-mate in Treviso’s 38-5 United rugby championship win over Zebre Parma The first game was played for less than an hour.
Italian Prop Traore, 28, who was born in Guinea, won a “gift” on Tuesday in a secret Santa exchange, a game in which individuals buy gifts and then distribute them anonymously.
Speaking on Instagram after the incident, Traore said he was used to “putting on a brave face every time he hears a racist joke…but yesterday was different”.
An unnamed player from Treviso, backed by clothing company Benetton, has been suspended and the Italian rugby federation launched a formal investigation on Thursday.
The URC also called for a full report on the incident, saying “racism and discrimination of any kind is abhorrent…and totally contrary to the values of the game of rugby”.
With “No To Racism” emblazoned on the back of Treviso’s shirts, 3,600 spectators at home cheered Traore on Saturday as the stubborn man made his first touch of the ball after half an hour to give the hosts a 7-0 lead. – Half of an impressive solo effort by Tomas Albornoz.
At halftime, the Niccolo brothers and Cannon crossed, and they extended their advantage to 19-0.
Traore was substituted in the 57th minute and was greeted with applause from the fans as he left the pitch.
South African full-back Leno Smith and hooker Giacomo Nicotra scored for the home side before Luka Biggi responded for the visitors, who are looking for their first away win since January 2021.
Substitute Riccardo Favretto completed Treviso’s sixth attempt with five minutes remaining as they moved below play-off point on points.
