J Balvin said he is not Afro-Latino after receiving the African-American Latino Artist of the Year at the African Entertainment Awards

Colombian singer and rapper J Balvin became popular this morning after receiving the African-American Latino Artist of the Year at the African Entertainment Awards. Although Balvin reportedly did not participate in the winning or nomination, people were angry that he was chosen instead of being an artist who was actually black.

After winning the prize on Sunday night, J Balvin clarified in this Instagram story that he is not an Afro-Latino, but thanks for the recognition of the African Entertainment Award.Soon after, the AE Awards issued a statement explaining that the award was not awarded solely on the basis of race, but an artist’s contribution to “propelling African culture to the world stage”

“The AFRO-BEAT LATINO ARTIST category applies to all Latin American artists who have contributed to African culture, especially the global African-American beat music,” wrote a post on the AE Awards Instagram account. “This is not based on race, but more importantly, it is based on bringing African culture to the world stage.”

The post continued, asking fans to send positive and encouragement to artists who “bridging the gap between Africa and Latin America”.

“Remember that nominees in this category have no say in nomination or the impact on the award ceremony. Rather than express dissatisfaction, it is better to encourage these artists to continue to bridge the gap between Africa and Latin America. We ask you to do so in 2022. Continue to provide support, assistance and guidance during the nomination process,” the statement concluded.

Although J Balvin admitted that he is not African-Latino, people on the Internet criticized him for having problems with racial issues in the past.As we are Reported before, The Colombian superstar apologized in October for pulling two black women on a belt in a music video for “Pella”.
