JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jaguars are listening to community members and sharing their vision for revamping the stadium and building a recreation area on the East Side.
We’ve all seen the renderings, but now Jacksonville residents have an opportunity to see the nuts and bolts of the proposed stadium renovation and share their thoughts and concerns.
They got their first chance to weigh in Monday morning in the first of 14 Huddle Up Jax events at the Strings Sports Brewery.
“When we go through this open process in ten days, we’ll have a better plan than we have now,” Jaguar president Mark Lampin said.
The project, which includes a revamped stadium and a new entertainment area, is estimated to cost between $175 and $2 billion, with taxpayers covering half the cost.
Lan Ping made it clear that this was a package deal.
“If it’s just a stadium, I don’t see a way to get it done,” Lanpin said.
Last week, Council President-elect Ron Salem (R-Group 2 At-Large) said he was surprised to see other projects related to the stadium.
“That’s a tall order for us,” Salem said in a June 8 interview.
Jags boss Shad Khan said he hoped council would get ready for the entertainment precinct.
“One plus one equals five, it’s supposed to be a multiplier effect, it has to be good for the city, otherwise it doesn’t make sense,” Khan said.
Jags fan Patrick Carney, on the other hand, is optimistic that the entertainment district could be part of a sales pitch for taxpayers currently on the fence.
“It’s just a tough sell because you’re not thinking about what it can do for Jacksonville long-term,” Carney said.
Mayor-elect Donna Deegan has asked for $2 million in the upcoming budget to help negotiate a deal.
Jags fan Mathew Parks told Action News Jax that he hopes she succeeds and brings the renderings to life.
“If you’re going to do that, let’s build something iconic. Let’s build something at the end of the day that we can all be proud of, something we can point to, instead of having a loser,” Parker said. S said.
Over the next ten days, Jag will host 13 more of these community events.
