The Indian minister is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly in India on Saturday under the theme “A Watershed Moment: Transformative Solutions to Chain Challenges”.
Security Council reform will be at the top of Jaishankar’s agenda as he meets dozens of world leaders during a week packed with General Assembly sessions and a number of side events.
U.S. Permanent Representative Linda Thomas-Greenberg said council reforms are expected to get a boost during the session as U.S. President Joe Biden will come up with ideas for his reforms and consult with other leaders.
He also plans to chair a meeting of foreign ministers of the G4, a group of India, Brazil, Germany and Japan that advocates expanding the Security Council and supporting each other’s demands for permanent seats.
During his visit to the United States starting today, Jashankar will also participate in a four-party meeting of India, Australia, Japan and the United States, the BRICS and several other major countries.
To mark the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, the highlight of Jashankar’s visit will be Saturday’s “India@75: Showcasing India’s UN Partnership in Action” event on New Delhi’s partnership with the UN and its commitment to the UN. Sustainable Development Goals move to the United Nations.
After two years of the coronavirus pandemic, the high-level meeting of the General Assembly has returned to a full face-to-face format and is expected to be attended by 153 heads of state or government, three deputy prime ministers and 34 foreign ministers.
