James Bond memorabilia bought for record £11m
The lots included a complete set by 007 writer Ian Fleming for £81,900 and a ‘Casino Royale’ screenplay for £69,300.
They were sold on Wednesday (05/10/22) in the second part of a charity auction at Christie’s in London.
It fetched a total of £770,994 from 36 lots sold.
Combined with four previous 007 auctions to mark the 60th anniversary of the Spy franchise, the auction house sold the Bond memorabilia for a total of £11,687,019.
All proceeds will benefit 45 charities.
Ian Fleming’s full set was expected to sell for £5,000, but it totally exceeded expectations.
Other top sellers include a Tom Ford suit worn by Daniel Craig in 2012’s “Skyfall” and another Tom Ford suit, worn by the veteran 007 actor in 2015’s “Ghost” .
A 2012 auction to celebrate James Bond’s 50th anniversary raised a total of £1,641,350, and in 2014 a 24-carat gold-plated third-scale replica of a spy’s Aston Martin DB5 sold for £136,800 in 2014.
At a previous Christie’s auction, a 007 Aston Martin DB5 fetched close to £3 million.
As the hunt for the next Bond actor continues.
According to the filmmakers, the next person to play James Bond should be in his 30s.
That means popular characters including Idris Elba, 50, Tom Hardy, 45, and Tom Hiddleston, 41, will be eliminated.
“We’ve tried to focus on young people in the past,” said Bond producer Michael G Wilson, 80.
“But trying to imagine it doesn’t work. Remember, Bond is already a veteran.
“He’s got some experience. He’s a guy who’s been through war, so to speak. He’s probably in the SAS or something.
“He’s not a high school kid you can bring in and start. That’s why it works for someone in their 30s.”
