He doesn’t do many feature films these days, and when he’s fully committed to a project, he tends to erase the best moments of the decade in his diary. The man is James Cameron, and he’s probably tweaking his upcoming Pixel as we speak avatar sequels, and then began work on three more.

collateral damage avatar Project is the home entertainment release of many of his films in an effort to keep up with the times. A technologically cutting-edge filmmaker like Cameron leaves his films far from perfect on physical media, especially as he struggles to find the space to address that.

While there are some signs of hope in his catalog, let’s take a look at where everything is…

Piranha II: Spawn

Let’s start with the good news.If you liked Cameron’s low-budget debut, the sequel Piranha, then this one is out there, and in HD. Pretty and simple. The limited-edition Blu-ray actually landed years agoand it’s unlikely that the film will look much better than it did at the screening there.

The rest of this article is not so straightforward.

terminator

terminator

Terminator (1984)

the original terminator In terms of home entertainment distribution, the film has done pretty well. It is widely available on streaming media, DVD and Blu-ray Disc. A 4K version hasn’t been released yet, but Cameron has overseen a remaster of his 1984 breakthrough for the past decade, and 4K doesn’t appear to be a priority for him.

That said, there are rumors that he may take back the rights terminator Maybe this will push 4K discs even further in the next few years. Still, even Cameron’s most ardent fan might argue that this isn’t the extra remake that should be at the top of the list of metaphors.

alien

Aliens (1986)

When Disney bought 21Yingshi Century Fox – In turn, 20day Century Fox’s movie library — it wanted franchises it could build on. Risky independent business? No. Already have a name? Yes, please.Nevertheless, it is prudent to move to alien As far as the saga goes, it’s understandable, since there are arguably only two and a half of them that are really good.

But it has a built-in fanbase, not least because the first two films are beloved classics in their field. So Disney is making a TV show, even if it doesn’t seem willing to move forward with Ridley Scott’s plans Alien: Covenant follow up.

Rumors are strong that it’s also very keen to make the most of the family-friendly franchise. Fox just got a full 4K version alien Before it was sold, but Disney is believed to be working on a 4K remake alien, Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection. We can only assume that Cameron, even if it is not a contractual requirement, will have the opportunity to sign alien Work, as a courtesy, at least considering he’s directing a high-profile blockbuster for the studio right now.

consensus is alien 4K processing is in progress. Further consensus is that you’d be crazy to throw any amount at the expected time.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

A release that has sparked much discussion among home entertainment enthusiast circles, Terminator 2: Judgment Day Has been made to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc, as well as DVD and Blu-ray. However, the 4K version has drawn some criticism. this is an article It provides a summary of where things are currently.

I’ve read some online chatter that suggested Cameron was ultimately not happy with how the post turned out, but he still hasn’t commented publicly. The movie was remade from his outline when it was re-released in 3D, so the original upgrade was apparently signed off by him. terminator 2 It remains the most widely read of all his films to this day.

true lie

true lie

a similar story abyss – Coming to that – but there’s a glimmer. This one never came out on Blu-ray or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc, and remains elusive on streaming services as well. Cameron insists it’s a film on his to-do list.

However, in October 2022, The film is available in HD on the Hulu service in the US. The Digital Bits reports that this is the master for the film’s abandoned Blu-ray release, so it’s not the 4K release fans were expecting. But at least there’s something there, and hopefully that version of the film will make it to streaming services in the UK.The complication is that rights are divided true lieIt’s a Fox – now Disney – film in the US, while Universal releases it in the UK. The wait-and-see game continues.

Titanic

Titanic (1997)

Titanic (1997)

It’s a case of hoping that two plus two equals four, but the clues there are promising. Cameron’s 11-time Oscar winner hits big — oops! – 25day birthday this year and is confirmed for release in theaters in February 2023. This wouldn’t have happened without Cameron’s blessing, and indeed, the film has been remastered in 3D 4K HDR and high frame rates.Cameron needs to sign off on the work, and the movie is set to hit theaters on Feb. 10day 2023 shows it’s done.

It feels almost inevitable that we’ll get a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc of the film to go with the existing DVD and Blu-ray options (and VHS, if you will). This hasn’t been confirmed, but I’m inclined to think it’s more likely.

avatar

'Avatar' returns to theaters in 4K

Avatar (2009)

Well, this one actually has movement.Already available on DVD and Blu-ray, the original avatar The film has been completely remastered for an all-new theatrical run and opens in theaters in September 2022.Crucially, this is a remake that Cameron has approved and is now expected to avatar will debut its 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc around the same time Avatar: The Way of Water Arrival format.

But for Cameron, it means he can go straight back to work Avatar 3and whether that gives him room to work on the next two films remains to be seen.

abyss

abyss

We broke the chronological order, saving this one for the (immediately after) last one. Just for a little drama.

This is the most frustrating block. It’s been a few years since we’ve actively confirmed the 4K restoration of 1989 abyss Has been completed. The film has only been released on DVD since the 2000s—an admittedly excellent two-disc special. No Blu-ray, no 4K disc: Another movie on James Cameron’s to-do list.

In March 2019, film colorist Skip Kimball posted a now-deleted Instagram image abyss The remake is complete. You can find that report there.

From there, it has to come back to James Cameron’s approval, and frankly, it doesn’t appear to be fully approved.

or is there?

The last time we heard about it was in December 2021, with Cameron about to start a new press conference, so hopefully this question will come up again. He told Space.com at the time, “We did the transfer and I wanted to do it myself because Mikael [Salomon, director of photography] A fantastic job was done on the cinematography of that movie. It’s really, really gorgeous cinematography.”

“So I just finished the HD transfer a few months ago, so presumably there will be Blu-ray, and it will be streamed through the appropriate transfer from now on”.

this is the articlewhich at least seems to confirm that Cameron has approved somethingThat said, we’re over a year in, and there’s no sign of it streaming, on Blu-ray or 4K disc, or an imminent announcement.

The hope here is to release Avatar: The Way of Water On home format would unlock something here, especially since it feels like the work might be almost done abyss. Probably just because this is now in Disney’s hands, not Cameron’s.

Where do we send the letter?

Avatar: The Way of Water
