Janelle Monae is determined to “live real”.
The 36-year-old singer revealed in April that she considers herself non-binary, and Janelle has been surprised by the accolades she has received from the LGBTQ community in recent months.
She shared, “I don’t necessarily see myself as a trailblazer or a pathfinder.
“I’m just trying to live that time in an authentic and honest way and honor that through my art, through the storytelling I do, and as a free **mother******.”
Janelle actually feels “more free” than ever.
She told E! News: “I’m patient, and as long as I know who I am and how I identify and respect that, I feel more at ease.
“I feel more free when we talk about non-binary storytellers and communities, and I feel like there’s still a lot of work to be done.
“If we can get more visibility, then I think a lot of people will be more educated.”
Janelle also recalled having an “internal conversation” before declaring she wasn’t binary.
The award-winning star said: “You can have an internal conversation with yourself until it feels good.
“I have to talk to me, and then I have to talk to my family and loved ones before I start letting it creep into my art because you don’t want to settle these things with other people in the world.”
Janelle first opened up about her gender fluidity on “Red Table Talk” earlier this year.
She said at the time: “I’m not binary, so I just don’t think of myself as a woman.
“I feel all my energy. I feel like God is so much bigger than ‘he’ or ‘she’. If I’m from God, I’m everything. I’m everything, but I’ll always, always be with women. I will always stand with black women.”
