A two-headed tortoise in Switzerland turned 25 on Saturday thanks to the dedication of its human managers.

The reptile, named Janus, lives in Geneva’s Natural History Museum, which has become one of its main attractions, and on his special day, he cleaned his body with a toothbrush.

The museum caters to every need of this animal.

Greek tortoises (Testudo graeca) are bathed daily with green tea and chamomile, massaged regularly, given a special diet and monitored for health.Janus is Hey Cut organic fruits and vegetables.

Other events commemorating his birthday include a “selfie with Janus”, meet and greet with his carers, and a science lecture detailing the peculiarities of Janus’ two heads.

Janus also has two hearts, two pairs of lungs, and two distinct personalities.

Sometimes, the head wants to go in a different direction.

“The right head is more curious, more awake, and has a stronger personality,” says Angelica Bulgan, who leads the turtle care team. “The left head is more passive and likes to eat.”

The nursing team constantly monitors Janus and is always vigilant in case he rolls over, a position that prevents him from getting back on his feet and can be fatal.

Born in captivity in the museum in 1997, the turtle received the name Janus, a reference to the two-faced god in Rome.

According to experts, the creature likely won’t survive predators in the wild because its head can’t retract into its shell to protect itself.
